Would it come as a surprise to you to know that, in Jerusalem’s big picture, that the early Christians and Jewish leaders had a much larger common enemy? The big picture struggle wasn’t an argument about whether or not Jesus was the prophesied Messiah, but rather over how to handle the occupation of Jerusalem by Rome. Even though Rome was the common enemy, the Jews and Christians had very different ideas on what to do about it.

James is the brother of Jesus and the de facto leader of the followers of The Way in Jerusalem at a time when you could smell revolution in the air. The tension in capital city was so think you could cut it with a knife. We may often think of the tension between the Jews and the new followers of Jesus, but that is simply tossed around by the bigger picture of the rank and file Jews being exploited by the aristocrat Jewish leaders and their oppressive Roman buddies. Hold on. This is going to be a bumpy ride as James promotes a new way to be human.

At the end of that period Israel was truly the crown jewel of the known world. Then, within 72 hours all of that changed.
After that fateful three days, the nation broke into two tarnished nations with little control over their own destiny. The Southern Kingdom survived a good 150 years longer than the Northern Kingdom, but both would be defeated resoundingly and drug off into exile. Israel would never again reach that kind of glory that Solomon’s time enjoyed.
So, what could you possibly learn from total defeat and destruction? Well, we are learning what not to do in leadership of God’s people. Join us while we work up a little schadenfreude and learn what not to do.

Eli and Rachel Keyes are building a CHIP (Chico Housing Investment Project) home. That is a program where creative financing and the sweat equity of friends and family make the dream of home ownership come true. The job sight has a foreman named Jason that keeps people working Tuesday through Saturday, 8AM to 4PM. Eli works out of town as a steal worker and so the whole family works at the home on Saturday. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Each family in the project is required to provide 30 hours of work a week. The families work on each other’s homes as the project progresses and no one moves in until the whole neighborhood is complete.

Solomon, the third king of Israel, will reap the benefits. He will lead the most respected nation in the known world and his own leadership and wisdom will make him famous.
But within all of this celebration is a sober reality that Solomon is the last king of a unified nation. After Solomon’s death, the Nation of Israel will be torn in two and begin a slide towards destruction for both pieces. Are their clues left in the Biblical record of Solomon that help us to understand what went wrong? And moreover, what lessons can we learn from the wisest man on earth to help us leave a better legacy that Solomon did.
We will be studying from the book of 1 Kings, referencing also 2 Chronicles (another Biblical book of the history of Israel), Proverbs and Lamentations (books in the Bible written by Solomon).

February 17, 2010
You know Fat Tuesday? Probably better known in the US as Marti Gras, Fat Tuesday is the culmination of three day long long festival of Carnival. This is an all-out celebration designed to get the party all of your system. Why? Because the Season of Lent starts at sunrise.

Christians have been observing Lent for over a thousand years. Although popularly associated with the Catholic Church and other high church traditions, Lent is also a great opportunity for spiritual growth that many Protestants miss out on. The 40 days of Lent are patterned after Jesus’ 40 days of prayer and fasting in the desert (before he began his earthly ministry).

Through this season of Lent, we have the opportunity to do three things. First, Lent gives us time for Sober Reflection. Where are you at in your relationship with God? Second, through Lent we are encouraged to take a 40-day time of Self-Examination. Are there areas of your life that you need to surrender to the Lordship of Christ? Finally, Lent can be a powerful time of Spiritual Redirection. Are you heading in the right direction spiritually, or do you need to step back and allow God to redirect your spiritual path towards Himself?

Lent is a season of mourning marked by fasting and a renewed dedication to prayer. Through fasting, we have the opportunity to “give something up in order to focus more on God.” Traditionally, some would fast a meal during this time period. Some would observe Lent by dedicating themselves to a sacrificial prayer life. Still others would find ways to give to others though service. Today, observing Lent can take many forms. Some will fast something that is a stronghold in your life, such as soda pop or TV. Over the next 40 days, whenever these people find themselves “craving” that thing, let it be a reminder to you to instead, pray and focus your attention upon God.

These 40 days are surrounded by two ceremonial observances – Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday. Maundy Thursday represents the day that Jesus ate the Passover Feast with His disciples (the first communion). Some traditions have decided that since Sunday is a day that we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, that we should not continue the mourning fast on Sundays. In those traditions, the fast ends on Easter to make up for the six days.

So, considering observing Lent this year? You can do so in your own way. Traditionally, you can give up a meal, either everyday, once a week or even completely fast one whole day a week. Or, you can find something you enjoy every day, like coffee, and give that up. Your little sacrifice will remind you of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice on the cross. You can take up a family Bible Study for six weeks or pull weeds at a neighbors house. However you observe Lent, I know the season will be focus your attention and make this Easter special.

Lent is often observed with a fast of some sort. Traditionally, it is a fast of food, where the Christian will spend 40 days denying their body and replacing the time with prayer and self induced discomfort to, in some small way, identify with the suffering of Jesus.

But, Lent can be observed in two other basic ways:
Rather than fasting food, you can fast fast-food! In order to remind you of the suffering and sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, you can give up something you enjoy: TV, eating out, caffeine or cigarettes. In its place, spend more time than usual in prayer and Bible reading.

Also, Lent can be a time of service for you. Find a way during Lent to serve people that cannot give back to you. In that way, you are identifying with the mission of Jesus.

So, when does the Lenten Fast end?
Glad you asked! It depends upon how you observe the fast. Many traditions break the fast on Sundays. The thought is that every Sunday celebrates the Resurrection. So, the 40 days runs to sundown on Maundy Thursday. Other traditions that observe a continual 40 day fast end at Palm Sunday.

This Week: Serving > Being Served

So why a series title called Greater Than? This title communicates two primary ideas for the month of August. The first idea is that we are going to make the actual REFUGE experience greater than it was last year with better worship, small group time accountability, games, teaching, videos. We are going to step up our game and really focus on what it means to do something greater than we have done it before. The second idea is that Jesus’ idea of greater than is different than our idea of greater than. Greater than to Jesus was to actually become less than in the eyes of culture. We become less than by becoming servants to all. The teaching for the month of August will be our first series in a string of series to help students move from being spectators to participants to servants.

By General Superintendent J. K. Warrick

I want to keep you updated on the crisis in Haiti. Information is flowing in a number of directions, and with the Internet, this will only increase. However, I made a personal commitment to the Haitian Nazarenes to build awareness for their plight, and I will do so through a series of letters to the Church of the Nazarene over the next few weeks.

Earthquake Damage Assessment

The plight of Haitians is affected by day-to-day developments. Aftershocks continue, with one measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale striking Wednesday morning, 20 January 2010, with the epicenter located west of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

In the South Central District, the district superintendent reports that 17 churches are down and many pastors’ houses have been destroyed.

In the Central District, the Nazarene church in Boutin is reported to be down.

The Tabarre church reports that eight people were injured and many members have lost their houses.

The Nazarene church of Bel-Air has many of their members missing. There is still no report on the total number of people who have died, but three have been confirmed dead.

The Nazarene church of Lastic knows of one member who is still missing. All that is known is that her house is down and they have not been able to find her.

The Petionville Church of the Nazarene has reported that the church has lost members and 75% of the members of the church have lost their homes.

People are sleeping outside their houses for fear that they may collapse on them. Many homes are still standing but damaged. After the first earthquake there was a damaged house that later collapsed and killed six people.

Food is becoming scarce, and water is hard to get. Diesel is also running out.

While it is difficult to tell at this time how many members the Church of the Nazarene in Haiti has lost, there is hope from reports that people are still being pulled out of the rubble alive.

Nazarene Response

The need in Haiti is for search and rescue first and then recovery and medical teams. They need money for food, water, living supplies, etc. It is inadvisable for teams to go into Haiti on their own at this time. The country is simply overrun right now with the tragedy, and officials need time to restore law and order. The Caribbean regional office is asking that this request be honored. Our updates will continue to provide information on further opportunities to be of assistance.

We have two medical teams now functioning on the campus of our Nazarene seminary, and several hundred Haitians are camped on the grounds. Our people there are working hard to accommodate all of this.

Bill (French field strategy coordinator) and Martha Dawson and Beth Luthye (regional Nazarene Compassionate Ministries coordinator) are now surveying Haiti for six days to get a firsthand idea of where we stand. Larry Bollinger (Nazarene Compassionate Ministries director for the Church of the Nazarene) will fly there on Thursday (21 January 2010). John Smee, the Caribbean regional director, and I will be returning to Haiti in March.

We have been working hard to put a strategy in place for the greater response of our people through Work & Witness teams. A web site will soon be up and running where folks can track the availability of space for work teams.

Those wanting to give may go to www.ncm.org/HaitiEarthquake for information.

Pray for the people of Haiti, the emergency responders, and medical teams now onsite. It will make a difference.

In and for Him,

J. K. Warrick
General Superintendent

We see images all over television like this one. The need is overwhelming!

Fortunately, you have friends in Haiti! The Nazarene Church is partnering with the Haiti Project to ship immediately needed supplies to the earthquake crisis in Haiti. The church’s Caribbean Office in Miami is coordinating the effort to get supplies on the ground. They have created a special store at Amazon.com that only includes the specific items requested by the people already on the ground in Haiti. To see these specific requests, please view the document at the Caribbean Church of the Nazarene Website.

In order for the items to reach Miami as soon as possible, we ask that you ship your amazon order directly to:
